Raising Racy Sauvignon Blanc

Posted by on Jul 26, 2013 in The Winemaker's Journal, Viticulture

Delicata recently completed plantations of just over 25000 new vines. The grape varieties planted were Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Moscato – three white grape varieties that the Delicata winery requires more of thanks to the success of the wines made from them, particularly the Gran Cavalier Sauvignon Blanc and Grand Vin de Hauteville Viognier and Moscato.

The Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted on seven tumoli (*) of land in Zebbug at the end of May. Six weeks later, all was very well under the hot Maltese sun.

These newly planted vines will not produce any fruit this year, though, but there will be a little bit of fruit next year. Well and truly, Delicata will have to wait until the summers of 2015 and 2016 to harvest a sizable crop.

(*) Tumolo is a Maltese unit of measure for surface. 1 tumolo equals 0.278 acres.

Well I have read your newsletter. I always drink your pleasant different wines. I look forward to drinking wine made from the new vines that you planted recently.

    Good luck.
